Why This Prompt Works (The Theory)

Contrastive prompting, as seen here, helps refine outputs by guiding the AI to recognize and replicate desirable traits while avoiding pitfalls, resulting in more effective and contextually appropriate responses.

This prompt works because it:

  • Structure: It provides examples (good and bad) to set clear expectations for the AI about tone, content, and structure.
  • Context: By sharing an actual review and examples of responses, the AI can identify desirable traits and pitfalls to avoid.
  • Task Clarity: The instruction to “write a new response for this review” is explicit, ensuring the AI knows the objective.

How to Use This Prompt (The Instructions)

  • Provide Examples: Include both strong and weak responses to set clear benchmarks.

  • Add Context: Share the original review and relevant background, such as the product or service in question.

  • Set Goals: Specify what the new response should achieve (e.g., balance empathy, professionalism, and customer engagement).

Good Example (Response):

"Thank you for your positive feedback! We’re thrilled to hear that our medication helped you manage your condition effectively. Your satisfaction is our priority, and we appreciate your trust in our product. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need further assistance."

Bad Example (Response):

"Glad you liked it. Let us know if you need more."

Task:

"Here’s a customer review: 'The medication worked well, but I had some minor side effects like nausea. Overall, I’m satisfied.' Using the examples above as guidance, write a new response that addresses both the positive feedback and the side effects."
