Create custom font with AI

Creating a custom font has never been easier thanks to the power of AI. This guide will walk you through the process step-by-step, making it simple to design a unique font that reflects your creativity and brand identity. By leveraging tools like ChatGPT and Calligraphr, you can design, upload, and finalize a font with ease.

Let’s dive into the steps!

Describe the Font You Wish to Create

Why It Matters

A font’s design must align with its purpose. By describing it upfront, you ensure:

  • Consistency in design choices.
  • Efficient execution with fewer revisions.
  • Alignment with the audience’s needs.

Key Steps

  • Define Purpose: Determine where and how the font will be used (e.g., branding, social media, signage).
  • Choose a Style: Decide on its tone (e.g., modern, playful, elegant) and emotions it should evoke.
  • Specify Features: Highlight key traits like symmetry, legibility, and decorative elements.
  • Set Parameters: Decide on uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and weight variations.

ChatGPT can help refine your concept and generate a list of descriptive terms for inspiration.

Create Each Letter, Number or Symbol

Why It’s Essential

Each letter is a building block of your font. Careful design ensures:

  • Consistency: Uniform strokes and spacing for a professional look.
  • Usability: Legibility in various sizes and settings.
  • Uniqueness: Adding distinct details to characters makes your font memorable.

Key Steps

  1. Sketch Each Letter: Focus on consistent traits like stroke thickness and proportions.
  2. Add Unique Touches: Incorporate flourishes or accents to enhance character.
  3. Save Each Letter as PNG: Save the image file in PNG format for compatibility with the next steps. During the saving process, when prompted to select a directory, ensure you rename the file to clearly reflect the letter it represents. Additionally, change the file extension from .webp to .png (e.g., from a default name like dalle.webp to letter.png). This step is crucial as it standardizes the file format and naming, making it easier to use the letter files in subsequent stages.

Moving from 26 images to a Font

Having all letters designed is close to a font, but it’s not a font. We need to convert these images into a font. We need specialized software for that. For this, we will use Calligraphr.

So, once you have designed the entire alphabet in your desired style, follow these steps to transform the designs into an official font package.

But let’s take a step back…

What is a Font?

A font is a digital file that defines the visual appearance of text characters, including letters, numbers, symbols, and punctuation. It determines how text is displayed, offering a consistent style for digital and print design. Fonts are essential for communication, as they provide the aesthetic and functional aspects of typography. The two most common font file formats are TTF (TrueType Font) and OTF (OpenType Font). TrueType Fonts, developed by Apple and Microsoft, are simple and widely supported across platforms, while OpenType Fonts, developed by Adobe and Microsoft, are a more advanced format offering additional features like ligatures and alternate characters.

TTF fonts combine screen and printer font data in a single file, making them efficient and straightforward to use. However, they lack some of the advanced typographic capabilities provided by OTF. OpenType Fonts are based on PostScript technology and support enhanced typographic features, making them ideal for professional designers working on high-quality projects. Both formats are binary files, meaning they encode data about glyph shapes, spacing, and font metadata, and are not human-readable.

What is a Custom Font?

A custom font is a unique typeface that is created to meet specific design or branding needs. Unlike standard fonts that are widely available and used, custom fonts are tailored to reflect a particular aesthetic, personality, or functionality. These fonts are often created for branding purposes, ensuring a business or individual has a distinct and memorable visual identity. Custom fonts can also be used in personal or creative projects, such as artwork or digital designs, to add a personalized touch.

Custom fonts are typically created using font design tools like Calligraphr, FontForge, or Adobe Illustrator, allowing users to design every aspect of the typeface, including letterforms, spacing, kerning, and stylistic features. The process involves drawing or importing characters, refining their design, and exporting them as font files (e.g., .ttf or .otf) for use in various applications.

Key Things to Know About Fonts

Fonts are structured to include data for the shapes of glyphs (character outlines), metrics (spacing and positioning), and additional metadata such as copyright or licensing information. They are not just files for displaying text but are complex tools for delivering a specific aesthetic or functional purpose. Choosing the right format depends on the use case: TTF is often sufficient for general use, such as web design or standard documents, while OTF is better suited for professional and creative applications requiring advanced typography.

Font files such as .ttf and .otf are binary files, meaning they do not contain human-readable instructions. Instead, they encode detailed information about glyph shapes, spacing, and font metadata in a format that requires specialized software to interpret. For example, on macOS, these files are processed by a converter that translates their encoded data into the visual font that can be loaded into Font Book. As binary files, they are not designed to be opened or read like a text document.

Prepare Your Images for Input.

Calligraphr provides templates to organize and upload your designs. Follow these guidelines:

  • Ensure each letter, number, or symbol has a clean white or transparent background.
  • If needed, use a background remover like Remove.bg to eliminate unwanted elements from your PNG files.

In our example, these are the results with a transparent background:

Transparent images of your letters will be placed on the Calligraphr template.

Place Your Designs on the Template

After cleaning (in terms of transparent background) your images, use our ready-to-use Canva template with the Calligraphr layout for English, available here.

If you need another language, download the PNG template directly from Calligraphr’s portal here and upload it to Canva.

Downloading a template from Calligraph

After placing each letter on the template using Canva, save the document as a PNG.

Upload the New Template

Return to Calligraphr and upload the completed template. The app will generate a preview of your letters, allowing you to check for consistency and make adjustments.

Generate the TTF/OTF File

To finalize your font package:

Choose the “Build Font” option in Calligraphr.

Save the generated TTF or OTF font package.

If you want to use your new font on your computer you first have to install it. The exact procedure of how to install a font on your system depends on if you use Windows or a Mac. For recent versions of those operating systems it is usually just a double click on the font file and then clicking on “Install font”.

You can find instructions on installing a font in these links: MacOS and Windows
